“And the day came when the risk to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom.” Anais Nin
How many of us meander through life halfheartedly hoping for change or for something to happen that will enliven our everyday existence? Perhaps we long for something or someone to do it for us? Never feeling courageous enough to initiate change for ourselves, so we don’t have to take a risk or the rap if it all goes wrong. But what if we couldn’t go wrong? What if taking action today on something we desire to have happen was in itself getting it right, whatever the outcome!
Take a moment to feel into your response to the previous sentence. What does it invoke in you? Next, I invite you to write down your answers to the following questions – and go with your hearts genuine response before the mind tries to edit the answers.
If you could change one thing about your life today, what would it be? What are the feelings and emotions you want to experience as a result of this change? What does taking a risk look like to you today? What did taking a risk look like to you 10 years ago? 20 years ago? And what might it look like 10 years from now?
I took what felt like a risk this summer when I travelled to mid-Portugal to take care of a friend of a friends garden and cats for 2 months. Though the idea arose quite unexpectedly it didn’t take me long to find my YES. Just one week in fact. So how did I go from a chance conversation to knowing it was the right thing to do? What was the process that had to happen for me to know what the necessary actions to follow were? What needed to come into alignment to facilitate the flow of events?
Firstly, I had to be willing to be open to the idea that taking 2 months off was a possibility to be entertained and not just dismiss it as absurd! Secondly, I needed to trust that if something in me felt it was the right thing to do then I would instinctively know what actions to take, one step at a time, to birth it into reality. Thirdly, I had to let go of the fear that my world (or at least my earning a living from doing what makes my heart sing) would come crashing down around me if I retreated to the hills for 2 months.
Finally, I reassured myself that if my desire to say YES was in alignment with my hearts intention to be of service to Sacred Life, then Life would guide and assist me in making it happen. I didn’t have to long to wait for tangible evidence that the stars were aligned and the reminder that change can happen quickly in the energetic realms. Within 2 hours of sending an email to friends asking if they knew of someone who would like to live in my home, whilst I was away, I had a positive response.
So was it worth the risk and what did I gain from my sabbatical?
Yes, it was 100% worth it! As apart from the deep peace and relaxation that arose from being the guardian of a beautiful village home and garden, I was reminded that the lessons of life are never what the mind expects them to be. Prior to my departure from the UK I would catch myself daydreaming about what Portugal might hold for me. The possibilities were endless and I was curious to explore. It turned out that the most fruitful learning was in my returning home. After contemplating staying on longer I decided against it: I could no longer ignore my desire to birth new aspects of my heart-led business into the world.
Put simply, there is no time to waste in showing up in service to Life!
What gives me hope and resources me despite the rising tide of deprivation, dis-ease and disconnection, is that there is so much to be grateful for. Staying present to the blessings that come from the simple joy of being alive. Feeling the warmth of autumn sunshine, gathering the late summer harvest of beans or hearing the giggles and delight of a toddler at play, we can connect to the preciousness of this Life and open up to the love it can embolden us to share with others.
Awaken to the mystery of being here and enter the quiet
Immensity of your own presence.
Have joy and peace in the temple of your senses.
Receive encouragement when new frontiers beckon.
Respond to the call of your gift and the courage to follow its path.
Let the flame of anger free you of all falsity.
May warmth of heart keep your presence aflame.
May anxiety never linger about you.
May your outer dignity mirror an inner dignity of soul.
Take time to celebrate the quiet miracles that seek no attention.
Be consoled in the secret symmetry of your soul.
May you experience each day as a sacred gift woven around the heart of wonder.
